Santa Fe Community – Aldea de Santa Fe
Aldea de Santa Fe was conceived by world renowned Andres Duany as a very promising mixed-use new urbanist community that could have become a vibrant eco-community for live, work and play. Aldea’s existing quaint pedestrian-oriented residential neighborhood is successful and almost completely built out with a wholesome variety of existing homes, parks, trails, open space and natural habitat preservation. But the developer unfortunately sold off and failed to develop most of Aldea’s mixed-use commercial Village Center property that remains mostly bankrupt and undeveloped, due to a flawed development plan combined with the developer’s lack of commitment to the promises they made. Developer made the situation worse when they wrongfully turned the Village Center management over to the neighborhood home owner’s association.
In an attempt to fix Aldea’s broken Village Center, a few Aldea commercial stake holders (including GaiaQuest), a few home owners, investor candidates and consultants created a more viable regeneratively sustainable development solution for Aldea’s commercial center that included demonstration Permaculture landscaping with community based food production opportunities, demonstration aquaponic greenhouse, garden-to-table restaurant, full-service boutique hotel, affordable euro-style hostel accommodations, community market, commercial conveniences and a world class center for health, fitness, arts, culture and lifestyle programs. Housed in university-style campus facilities connected by beautiful gardens, this alternative could provide a demonstration of how an existing community with a failed Village Center could still evolve into a vibrant successful new urbanist eco-community if it is retrofitted with a regeneratively sustainable Permaculture based development solution. However, this can only happen if the community successfully stops the original developer’s recent attempt to change Aldea’s critical anchor commercial property use and zoning from commercial to residential.
GaiaQuest created and launched our original headquarters at Aldea de Santa Fe, where it provided a base for GaiaQuest’s consulting services and Online Center. When it became evident that Aldea probably wont ever become the mixed-use new urbanist village it was conceived to be, GaiaQuest moved to a more promising eco-village development opportunity located at Taos in early 2017.
